Code:
03348-1

Stainless spring-loaded hatch supports that prop and hold lids open. Two lengths available: 210 mm and a longer 260 mm, to suit different hatch sizes. Easy to install, they provide safety and convenience when accessing boat compartments.

  • Two Sizes for Your Needs: 210 mm for smaller/lighter lids; 260 mm for larger/heavier hatches – choose the right option for your boat.
  • Auto-Lock Open Position: Spring mechanism locks the hatch upright, preventing it from falling, and folds down with a gentle push to close.

Add convenience to your boat’s hatches and lids with these stainless spring hatch holders. Two models are available: 210 mm and 260 mm, which share the same operating principle but differ in length and strength to cover a range of applications. Both models are made of polished stainless steel, making them suitable for use in harsh marine environments – they won’t rust or seize up from salt and grime.

Features of Both Models:

  • 210 mm model (spring coil ~11 mm diameter): Extends to about 210 mm when fully open. Recommended for smaller hatches and lids – e.g., bench seat lids, small deck access panels, battery box covers or tank lids on boats up to around 6–7 meters. This shorter support has a compact stroke, appropriate for lightly loaded or smaller panels.
  • 260 mm model (spring coil ~15 mm diameter): Extends to roughly 260 mm at full extension, providing a wider opening. Recommended for larger and heavier hatches/lids – e.g., main deck hatches, big storage compartments, engine bay covers on yachts or cabin doors on boats 7+ meters. The longer support has a beefier spring and larger diameter to confidently hold up the heavier lid.

Operation: Both models function the same way – when you lift the hatch, the two-piece spring strut straightens and locks in the extended position, holding the hatch open. To close, simply raise the hatch a touch higher or push on the spring to “break” the joint – then the mechanism folds and lets the hatch close. This movement is controlled, so the lid will not crash down abruptly.

Installation & Use:

  • Mount one end of the device to the fixed frame (the hatch coaming or surrounding surface) and the other end to the moving lid. Typically, one end has a flat bracket with screw holes, and the other has a pivoting bracket/eye. Ensure you install the spring on the same side as the hinge, at a distance such that when fully open, the support snaps straight.
  • When the lid is closed, the mechanism folds neatly, lying between the hatch and frame without interfering with the seal. In the open position, the support stands rigid and carries the weight.
  • Tip: For very large or heavy hatches, you can use two supports (one on each side) for added assistance and stability. For example, an engine bay hatch on a powerboat often employs dual springs for safety.

Safety & Advantages:

  • Safety: Spring holders prevent lids from falling when there’s a sudden jolt or wind gust. This protects not only your fingers and equipment underneath, but also the hatch itself and its hinges from slam damage.
  • Convenience: They allow you to work without holding the lid – for instance, when inspecting the engine, refueling, loading gear in a locker – you have both hands free.
  • Versatility: Though designed for boats, these spring props can also be used in RVs, campers, or around the home wherever a lid or panel needs to stay open. Anywhere you might use a stick or adjustable strut to hold something open, you could install this automatic spring mechanism.
  • Durability: With no hydraulic or gas elements, these supports are long-term reliable – there’s nothing to “leak out” or lose pressure. It’s just solid metal and a spring. With proper use, the mechanism can endure thousands of cycles. If they get dirty with dust/salt, a quick rinse and a spray of lubricant will have them working like new again.
